Navigating IVF Costs in India: A Transparent Guide

The Danger of Quoted Base Prices

Many fertility clinics advertise IVF cycles starting at "only ₹90,000". However, this base price rarely tells the complete story. A couple entering treatment is frequently met with significant necessary expenses that are not included in the initial quote:

  • Hormonal Stimulation Medications (₹30K - ₹80K): The dosage of daily injections depends on a woman's AMH levels and body weight. Ovarian stimulation medication accounts for 30% to 45% of total cycle costs.
  • Embryo Freezing & Storage (₹40K - ₹60K): Since transferring multiple embryos increases the risk of high-risk multiple pregnancies, standard practice is to freeze extra blastocysts. Storage and thawing fees are billed separately.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Procedures like Endometrial Receptivity Analysis (ERA), Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A), or surgical retrieval like TESA can add up to ₹1.5L to the cycle cost.

Warning: "Money-Back Guarantee" Schemes

Some clinics advertise multi-cycle bundles with "100% money-back guarantees." Under the ART Regulation Act 2021, these are strictly structured financial insurance products, not medical assurances. They often exclude couples who need donor eggs, have low ovarian reserves, or present severe male factor complications—exactly the patient profiles most likely to need multiple cycles. Read all small print and request itemized cost lists.

Checklist of Questions to Ask the Clinic Accountant

  1. Does the cycle package price include hormonal stimulation drugs? If so, up to what dosage limit?
  2. Are donor gamete matches, legal fees, and laboratory compensation fees itemized?
  3. What are the exact fees for freezing extra embryos, and how long does the initial storage cost cover (usually 6 months or 1 year)?
  4. If the cycle is canceled before egg retrieval or before embryo transfer due to medical complications (OHSS), how much of the fee is refunded?
